Managing in the 21st Century

Managing in the 21st Century is not easy. Today, there are Baby boomers, Gen X'ers, and Millenials in the work environment. As a manager, how do you effectively manage these generations?

Through this blog, I would like to have some input on how others have instituted their leadership styles with each of the generations. As for me, I tend to lead from the Servant Leadership side. As a Servant Leader, you have to look toward the future. Seek what is out there for tomorrow. As a Tomorrow Leader must learn how to create an environment that embraces change, not as a threat but as an opportunity (Warren Bennis, in Spears & Lawerence, 2002).

Ten Traits of a Tomorrow Leader: (1) Successful leaders have self-awareness and self-esteem; (2) Leaders ensure that boundaries are porous and permeable; (3) Competitive advantage will be the leadership of women; (4) Leaders have a strong defined sense of purpose and vision; (5) Leaders generate trust; (6) Leaders have a bias toward action; (7) Leaders create not just a vision, but a vision with meaning; (8) Leaders must become very comfortable with advanced technology, and the changes that it will bring; (9) Leaders must act big if they are small and small if they are big; and (10) Ultimately leaders make federation of corporations.
(Spears & Lawerence, 2002).
